Project Description

The monitoring of the migratory fish, wild Atlantic salmon (Salm salar) is of global importance. Within Scotland, river-based resistivity counters are used to detect the presence of Atlantic Salmon.

Excite Technology have been working alongside SSE to support them in designing a new cutting-edge machine-learning based system for accurate and reliable detection of Atlantic Salmon.

Excite’s hardware consists of proprietary high-resolution low-light camera’s specially mounted in strategic positions within SSE’s hydro power stations. Images are captured at a low frame rate and stored locally before being transferred to an off-site server for image processing where AI algorithms are used to accurately count the number of fish that have passed.

Once fully implemented this system could provide crucial information for the efficient management of fisheries.
